D. Caleb Smith’s research explores the intersections of African American, civil rights, labor, and legal history. His work uses the experiences of black workers in examining the progress and efficacy of federal fair employment policies during the President Kennedy and President Johnson administrations. For his first book project, he is currently revising his dissertation. Smith is one of five fellows participating in the American Society for Legal History’s 2023–2024 Wallace Johnson Program for First Book Authors.
